Maps Classic Embroidery have an extensive range of cross-stitch map samplers which would make a lovely heirloom for family historians and can be easily personalised with the names of villages/towns when stitching the design.
The kits are available with either 14ct aida or 28ct evenweave, and the Anchor threads are pre-sorted onto organiser cards. Each kit comes with a clear black and white chart with and separate backstitch diagrams. There are some fractional stitches used to get a good level of detail in the pictures in the designs.
